Jill D. Sweet, Santa Fe, New Mexico: School of American Research Press, second edition, 2004. Vivid descriptions and photography, plus Pueblo Indian commentary, provide meaningful understanding of the dance ceremonies.

Marc Simmons, Albuquerque, University of New Mexico Press, New Edition, 1998. Written by a prominent historian, this paperback edition provides an understanding of the character of the state and diversity of its cultures.

Lucien Niemeyer & Art Gomez, Albuquerque, University of New Mexico Press. 2004. The authors have provided travelers and residents alike with a book of excellent photographs and a well-written history of the state.

North American Jewelry and Adornment From Prehistory to the Present

Lois Sherr Dubin, New York, New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc. 1999. Dubin has written a remarkable and comprehensive book, rich with details of North American Indian cultures and thousands of color photographs of items of adornment in vivid historical and contemporary descriptions.

Pueblo Nations: Eight Centuries of Pueblo Indian History

Joe S. Sando, Santa Fe, New Mexico: Clear Light Publishers. 1992. An American Indian scholar provides an excellent history of the Pueblo Peoples of New Mexico.

Pueblo People: Ancient Traditions, Modern Lives

Marcia Keegan, Santa Fe, New Mexico: Clear Light Publishers. 1998. Beautiful photos and descriptions of traditional values portray life in the pueblos.

Pueblos of the Rio Grande: A Visitor’s Guide

Daniel Gibson, Tucson, Arizona: Treasure Chest Books/Rio Nuevo Publishers. 2001. This handsome book has a wealth of information about each of the nineteen pueblos along the Rio Grande.

Saints of the Pueblos

Charles M Carillo, Albuquerque, New Mexico: LPD Press. 2004. Based on an Indian Pueblo Cultural Center exhibit this book portrays the author’s retablos, or paintings, of the patron saints. It includes insight into traditions of pottery-making and essays about the cultures.
